Thagoona Online Council Election Update #2

To be quite honest this election has the most difficult landscape for the average punter to grasp and get a feel for in my time in my 41 years in Ipswich.

Don’t make that statement lightly as I am watching donations come in, So called Independant Sites, and since the full nominations and starting boxes allocated, I’m trying to see how the cards will fall as a ratepayers perspective.

The first “Concern” is Social Media. I have watched sites that claim to be the peoples advocacy but if you look really closely on the postings you will find the people posting are only a picture and a locked profile. Last count 8 fake accounts all pushing out controversial issues designed to push an agenda towards right wing crackpots.. This is an American Election Strategy.

I will leave this concern there at this time as more to come..

Second “Concern” is watching the election donations I have noticed candidates with the ability to own businesses have the ability to donate funds to a political party then I imagine that party supports that candidate and I imagine that person can claim tax benefits..

If thats legal fine, but that leaves Joe Citizen without that cushion funding her or his Campaign without any refund and all costs to try to do a public service.
That does not pass the pub test for me, but obviously it does some.

And Thirdly “Concern” and in my book the the biggest is the with the “two councillors per division” set up, having balanced representation, male and female reflects the ratepayers they represent.

This is not a sexist issue in my book, it’s a safeguard in getting a balanced view on the council floor from the people they represent.

We have all lived through the boys club councils and that outcome was tragic to all of out Ipswich residents and we don’t to repeat so keeping the balance is critical to good performance so I urge to consider that point on the way to the boxes.
